Canadian Teen Wins Lotto for Life!

These past few weeks have proved to be trailblazers for a few lucky Canadians! And indeed a great time for Canadian lotteries in general.

Just at the very end of February, 31 workers from Atlantic Canada cashed in a sweet C$1.9 million each. And now, one incredibly lucky Canadian teen from Montreal has hit a life-time jackpot that we've all dreamed of claiming ourselves: C$1000 every week, for her entire life.

How did it happen?

Canada Maple Leaf SymbolOn the 14th of March, Charlie Lagarde decided to celebrate her 18th birthday by experiencing real independence: buying a bottle of champagne, and – of course – buying her first ever lotto ticket. Yes folks, it was her first ever ticket. Little did she know, her life would be pretty much set for all her days to come.

Largarde, who hails from the southeast of Montreal, bought the Gagnant à Vie scratch ticket, worth $4, from a convenience store. She then claimed the prize on Monday at Loto-Québec‘s head office in Montreal. She was joined on the happy occasion by her family and friends.

Why did she choose $1 k/week over $1 mil?

Twin Casino WageringShe was given the choice between claiming the C$1,000,000 sum all at once, or cashing in $1,000 every week, for the rest of her life. This latter option also happens to be totally tax-free, as opposed to the former choice – we would've been heavily taxed. Already, this means that Lagarde made the right call in terms of getting more out of her luck in the long-run.

As these expert financial advisers for the BBC confirmed, Lagarde really did make the ‘overwhelmingly' correct decision in her case.

As Sarah Coles, of the UK investment company Hargreaves Lansdown, explains:

This removes all temptation to spend on things that feel like more of a priority at the age of 18 than they might later in life.

Patrice Lavoie, spokesperson for the lottery corporation Loto-Québec, also commented that:

It's without taxes so it's equivalent to a salary of more than $100,000 a year, so it's a great start in life for that young lady.

That was her first lottery ticket ever and she fell upon a winning ticket.

Lagarde's case really is the stuff that dreams are made of. We're willing to bet that any future birthday will be hard pressed to beat her 18th. Lady Fortune was smiling down pretty fondly on the day, and we're always glad to see someone win a slice of the lotto pie.

What's next for Charlie Lagarde?

Canadian Lotteries - Lottery SheetEven though she did win herself a fail-safe life-time salary in one fell swoop, Lagarde still has big plans for the future.

She reportedly told Loto-Québec that:

I want to study photography. One of my dreams would be to work for National Geographic.

Hopefully the safety-net of $1000 a week will be able to help her achieve her dreams, and see her go far.

Best of luck to you, Charlie! As for us, until the next lotto win. Which – judging by the current climate – won't be too long now.
