Microgaming is combining the mysterious allure of Native American culture with the spectacular wonder that is the Northern Lights. The result is a 5 reel 10 payline slot offering players medium volatility and a return to player rate of 96.2%. While this sounds fairly uninspiring, the addition of multiple stacked wilds and 4 jackpots up for grabs does push things in a more positive direction. Let’s see what this combination yields, and whether or not this slot can take you to the stars with its 2,000 x the stake maximum win.

Aurora Wilds - Theme and Background
Aurora Wilds isn’t going to blow you away with a high-tech theme packed with animation and surprise features. But despite the simple set up, it manages to surprise the player with its soothing color palette and stunning backdrop.
Designed around the spectacular vista that is the Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis to those who prefer the fancier term) players will be treated to a purple and blue hued night sky littered with glittering galaxies from afar. The graphics are well designed and quite beautiful, made up of a range of interesting symbols that are likely to capture your attention for a good long while. Each symbol is a different totem, or spirit animal, designed in its own color and with a very unique style. You’ll be treated to birds, turtles, bison, fish, and rabbits. There’s also a glinting 7 symbol and an old school BAR. Happily, there isn’t a card suit or Royal in sight.
The Wild is a crystal butterfly and a gold wheel represents the jackpot trigger. Read on to find out how these two special symbols come into play to win you cash prizes.
Aurora Wilds - Gameplay
Considering it’s such a simple slot, Aurora Wilds comes with more features than you’d expect. The best part is that it’s all really straightforward too, so there’s no danger of feeling lost among all those twinkling galaxies.
These are represented by a glowing crystal butterfly and appear on reels 2, 3 and 4 only. Once one of these symbols lands it expands to cover the entire reel. The symbol is a big contributor to the larger base game wins, substituting for all symbols except the Jackpot symbol (more on this below).
To make the Expanding Wilds even more rewarding, they come hand in hand with free re-spins. Immediately after the reels expand, a re-spin is awarded with the expanding wild locking in place. If another Expanding Wild symbol lands during that respin, it will also expand, lock in place and a new re-spin will follow. If you’re lucky enough to land the Wild for the third time in a row you’ll be running with all 3 of the middle reels as fully stacked Wilds locked in place, an exceptionally exciting position to be in with regard to payouts.
Aurora Wilds comes with 4 Jackpots, the prize of each is calculated on the player’s bet level. You’ll need to land the gold wheel symbol to be in with a chance at one of the guaranteed jackpot prizes, and this won’t be super easy because the symbol only appears on the middle 3 reels. Manage this and a striped colored wheel will replace the grid. Spin the wheel and wait for one of following four prizes:
- Mini Jackpot gives you 15 times your stake
- Minor Jackpot gives you 50 times your stake
- Major Jackpot gives you 100 times your stake
- Grand Jackpot gives you 2,000 times your stake
During my testing phase I hit the jackpot twice, both times I was awarded the Mini Jackpot, which was a little disappointing. Shout out to you lucky people who hit the Grand!
Aurora Wilds - Payouts and Wagering Limits
The slot runs with 10 active lines and gives players the opportunity to bet between C$0.10 and C$60. This means that up to C$6 can be wagered on each active line. While this might sound reasonable to most players, those who like to play big will lament the lack of a C$100 bet.
The slot’s top prize of 2,000 x can be won if you land the Grand Jackpot, and while this is no easy task, it’s more attainable that the top win found with most slots. If you’re happy to walk away with smaller prizes then you’ll be pleased to learn that the lower 3 jackpots offer 100 x, 50 x and 15 x.
Wins outside the jackpot game will mainly come from Wild and Expanding Wild combinations, as the symbols in their basic form won’t stretch to much. A screen filled with the highest paying symbol will give you 500 x per spin, and the easiest way to get there is by getting 3 fully expanded reels locked in place.
Aurora Wilds - Final Verdict
I liked this slot very much, largely because I was extremely surprised by the frequent and sizable payouts. These were much larger than you would usually get with a medium volatility slot. Despite the lack of a free games bonus, the Expanding Wild feature served to generate decent wins in the base game that made up for this lapse. This was helped along by the possibility of landing 1 of 4 jackpots with each spin. Even though I only ever secured the minor, there’s no reason why the other 3 larger prizes aren’t equally attainable.
In conclusion, I like to think of Aurora Wilds as a simple slot offering an astronomically good time.
