In early 2017, Thunderkick released their Luchadora slot to much excitement and expectation. Safe to say, it didn’t let anyone down – online casinos and players alike. With a punchy, bright theme and a boatload of game features, the Luchadora slot became an instant success the minute it launched. It is of medium to high volatility, with a great max payout of 1,995x the original bet. As expected of Thunderkick, the graphics and design-concept behind the slot are also of top-notch quality. All this, coupled with the 25% hit frequency that it comes with, makes Luchadora incredibly fun to play. We’ll admit it’s not the most innovative creation to come out of the Thunderkick offices, but players won’t find much to complain about in terms of this slot’s gameplay. Intrigued? Stick around for the whole review.

Theme & Background
‘Luchadora’ means ‘fighter’, or ‘wrestler’, and the Luchadora slot is all about Mexican wrestling.
This isn’t the first time Thunderkick have turned to Mexican culture for inspiration. Esqueleto Explosivo is a weird yet brilliant fusion of mariachis and the Day of the Dead (still one of our favorite slots, conceptually speaking, to this day). While this slot doesn’t have anything as original as exploding singing heads, it does play up another exhilarating aspect of Mexican culture: wrestling. Maybe some of you will have seen the Jack Black film Nacho Libre, or you happen to be into Mexican wrestling. Either way, you’re probably somehow familiar with the creative costumes, the ridiculously entertaining moves, and the crazy characters. A perfect setting for an equally exciting slot game.
The Luchadora slot has its own set of crazy characters who can go ‘wild’ at any moment: El Toro, El Rayo, El Serpiente and El Pantera. As you can tell from their names, they’re just as ferocious as the animals they represent. These wrestlers show their true colors on the reels, and if you’ve made a lucky bet, they might even reward you with riches beyond your wildest dreams. The rest of the special features are similarly themed around the Mexican wrestling theme, but you probably care more about what they do than what they look like. More on that below.
Like we’ve said repeatedly already, the Luchadora slot comes with a lot of various special features. These include wrestler wilds, scatters denoted by the ‘Lucha Bonus’ symbol, the Underdog/La Luchadora symbol, ring corner feature, and the Lucha bonus game. Combined, these special features make one dynamic and profitable slot game. We’re also happy to say that, in our own gameplay, we triggered the special features regularly enough to make a pretty penny from it.
Before jumping into the description of the special features – it’s best we explain the four corner positions of the reels. These 4 corner positions are the top-most and bottom-most positions on reels 1 and 5. They are originally unclaimed, but when their respective reels spin they can become claimed when a Wrestler symbol stops on them.
Now, here’s a more detailed insight into how the special features function together.
Explore Luchadora Symbols
The Wrestler Wilds correspond to their respective Wrestler symbols: El Toro, El Rayo, El Serpiente and El Pantera. Wilds are triggered when one of the Wrestler symbols stops in a corner position. This will make all the corresponding Wrestler symbols of the same type transform into Wilds as well on the rest of the reels. On the paytable, this is identified as The Wilds can substitute all other symbols on the reels, except for the scatter symbols (Lucha Bonus Symbols) and the Lucha Smackdown Symbol. This is in order to help form winning combos. In the main game, the Wrestler Wild lasts one round, from a spin to the next.
Lucha Bonus Symbol
This acts as the scatter symbol of the slot. 3 Lucha Bonus symbols trigger the Lucha Bonus Game, and a number of free spins according to the paytable. Basically, landing 3 scatters will get you 7 free spins, 4 scatters will get you 11, and 5 scatters will get you 15 free spins. Not bad at all.
Lucha Smackdown Symbol
The Lucha Smackdown symbol is another special gem in this Luchadora slot game. It can only appear on reel 5, but when it shows up in the main game it can award free spins or even a bet multiplier.
Lucha Bonus Game
Aside from getting free spins, Wilds and Smackdown symbols act differently in the bonus round. The Smackdown symbol can still award free spins and bet multipliers (yes, that essentially means it can keep on adding free spins to your already existing free spins), but it can also claim a random corner position and trigger the ring corner feature. If the ring corner feature is activated during the bonus game, then the Wilds will remain throughout the entirety of the round, not just for one spin. So, as you can see, the two symbols work together to create an extremely volatile bonus round.
Underdog/La Luchadora Symbol
If, during the Lucha Bonus Game, all four corners have been occupied by a Wrestler symbol and therefore all Wrestler symbols have been transformed into wilds, the ‘Underdog symbol’ (denoted by a ‘Misterioso Campeon’ written across it) will turn into the La Luchadora symbol for the remainder of the bonus round. La Luchadora has a much higher payout than the Underdog symbol, and so it can cash in a lot of big wins for the player.
Payouts and Wagering Limits
The paytable for the Luchadora slot is much longer than this, but we’ve chosen to contrast the highest paying symbols with the lowest paying symbols. As you can see for yourselves, even the lower payouts aren’t that low compared to most other video slots around right now. The higher symbols aren’t really that high either, which makes this paytable somewhere in the middle-range for value. Given that it has a lot of special features which make the slot more volatile, we can understand that the paytable is average in value. You wouldn’t want to burn a hole through your pocket right from the get-go.
The RTP of this slot is 96.2%, which is also average for modern slots. The hit frequency is set at 25% – a good enough percentage to keep the game moving and exciting. We ourselves were entertained for a good half hour on this thing without really noticing the time go by.
This slot has an interesting theme going for it, plenty of special features, and free spins. While the paytable isn’t that great, it doesn’t belong at the lower end either. This is what makes the Luchadora slot a slot for all sorts of players: the gaming pros, and the casual players. And that’s why we’re giving it a 4-star rating.
