Welcome to the jungle with the Mayana slot from Quickspin. Different from the usual type of slots – you can now experience a slot that can have anywhere between 3-5 reels and 27-243 ways to win. We’re living in wild times, wild times. True to Quickspin quality, this slot is bright and colorful and highly detailed. It seems to dance somewhere in the area between being of low volatility and medium volatility. Don’t expect any big wins from this slot, but it does give consistent and small payouts. And, spoiler alert, it gives out Respins for every winning combo on the reels. Take a trip on the wild side, and take a spin on Mayana. For more info on what makes this slot tick – keep on scrolling down.

Slots Features

Respin after every winning combo, especially with the expanding reels, greatly increases chances of wins.

Mucha Mayana feature can award up to a 20x multiplier. If you get the 20x multiplier, you’re guaranteed a big win.

Locking symbols during the Respins get you one step closer to a full screen of the same symbol. Add the multipliers to that, and kaching.

Although it has Respins, it doesn’t have Free Spins. And there’s a limit to how many Respins you can get (3 in total).

Definitely not a slot for the risk-takers and high-rollers. Payouts are not that great in the base game (and there are no bonus rounds).

This slot game doesn’t have a lot of special features. Eventually, gameplay might get a little boring for the casual player.

Theme & Background

The Mayans were an ancient civilization in what we today know as Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and so on. As you can probably tell just from that list – they were huge in number and widespread. They were great innovators when it comes to mathematics, astronomy, architecture, art, you name it. Advanced beyond their time, they were the people who eventually gave rise to other famous civilizations like the Aztecs. In fact, when it comes to theme and concept, Mayana reminds us a lot of Play’n GO’s Aztec Warrior Princess. Slot providers love a bit of cultural diversity, don’t they?

The background of this slot is set in the jungle, just like where most Mayan ruins are found today. The symbols of the slot are either made up of jungle animals, or some kind of creature significant to Mayan religion. The sort of animals you’d expect to see carved into a totem pole or something. One of the highest paying symbols is the ‘Red Priest’ (which is slightly incorrect, since Mayans had shamans and not priests). He’s a scary looking guy, that Red Priest, with a Mayan head-dress around his face. Thankfully, one thing this slot doesn’t represent is the human sacrifice Mayan religion required of its believers.

So, although in reality this slot doesn’t have that many special features, the features it does have are a little complex. As you can imagine, given that Mayana is an expanding reel slot, it also complicates some aspects of the gameplay in that sense.

Confused about what an expanding grid is? Give the below information a quick glance to familiarize with what you’re getting yourself into.

Explore Mayana Symbols

Expanding Grid

Players start off with 3 reels and 3 rows. Basically, this means you initially only have 27 different ways to win. You’ll immediately notice that there are two more reels, one on each side of the 3 default reels, which are locked. The two additional reels can only be accessed when landing winning combos on the reels. 3 or more of the same symbol will stick whether in the middle, left or right and then expand the reels. Each time you land a win, a single square will unlock. That’s right – 1 win does not = 1 unlocked reel. You need multiple wins for that.

Eventually, when you do manage to unlock the full 2 additional reels, you’ll get a 5 reel slot5 x 3 grid = 243 ways to win. A significant improvement, wouldn’t you say? When the player stops landing winning combos, the 2 extra reels will go back to being locked. Then the expansion process starts all over again.

When the player manages to land 3 connecting symbols in a row, it’ll trigger the Respin feature. Basically – land a win, get a Respin. Not a bad deal. During the Respin, the original connecting symbols will stick. If more winning combos hit the reels during the Respin, they will again stick and another Respin will happen. There’s a total of 3 possible Respins for each unique time it’s triggered in the base game.

Consecutive wins also increase the multiplier up to 3x. With the Respins, it’s also possible to get a full screen of the same symbol. Combined with the multiplier, this means serious payouts.

Mucha Mayana Feature

The Mucha Mayana Feature is triggered on the final Respin, or alternatively when the reel grid is fully expanded even prior to the third Respin. During the Mucha Mayana feature, the multiplier amount will randomly increase. The multiplier ranges between 4x – 20x. Imagine if it goes all the way up to a potential 20x multiplier. 20x on a fully expanded reel, with high paying sticky symbols. Kaching! Given that this feature activates only on the final Respin, after connecting symbols have stuck, or after a full reel grid is achieved, it means the player will definitely win a lot of money.

For sure, it’s only through the combination of the Respins and the Mucha Mayana feature that the maximum win of this slot is possible. And only via the 20x multiplier.

Payouts and Wagering Limits

Mayana Paytable

As you can tell from the above paytable, the Red Priest has a decent payout. However, there’s a considerable difference between the Red Priest and the second highest paying symbol. You don’t even want to know what the lower paying symbols are like. After all, like we’ve been saying, don’t expect any big payouts from the base game of this slot. Sure, when you’re playing on 243 ways to win, the chances of big wins are pretty high. But at the default level of 27 ways to win? Bank more on smaller, consistent payouts.

The Respins are easy enough to trigger, as is the Mucha Mayana feature itself. What’s much more difficult to get is a full reel of the same symbol, and a 20x multiplier. Ultimately, this is where the relatively high plays are at. Still, with an RTP of 96% (the average for most video slots), it’s nothing to scoff at. It means the player will get plenty of opportunities to win some money, even if it’s not a big amount. We still prefer other Quickspin slots like the extremely volatile Spinions (even if Mayana is much more fun in terms of theme and graphics) and Gold Lab.

Final word of advice: if you’re looking for a half hour of high stakes and excitement, this Mayana slot isn’t go to do the trick for you. If you’re just looking to relax a little, not have to worry about blowing through your cash, than it’s a much better candidate.

Final Verdict

All things considered, Mayana is a sweet slot (depsite the creepy looking Red Priest). After about 100 spins, we found that our bankroll might’ve actually gone up a little instead of down. Following up on the heels of the Fairy Gate slot release, this Quickspin creation is satisfactory enough. All the main elements are still there: graphics, special features and RTP. Transport yourself  into the world of South America, back in time, to when one of the greatest civilizations in the world was at its prime. Maybe you too could become king/queen of the jungle in no time at all.
