Theme & Background
If you haven’t seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you’re seriously missing out. It’s a tale as old as time: the quest for the Holy Grail by King Arthur and his knights of the round-table, only as can only be told by Monty Python. From start to finish, this movie will have you rolling on the floor if you’re a fan of that dry British humor. Countless of gifs and memes have sprouted from this one film alone, so it was only a matter of time before it was turned into a half-way decent video slot. And Playtech are the ones to have done it.
The setting is Camelot, the main characters are King Arthur himself, Sir Lancelot, Sir Robin, Sir Galahad, Sir Bedevere and Patsy. Please note: these names are not necessarily true to legend. Basically, think England in the Middle Ages with a whole lot of myth, satire and puns thrown in. Then you’ll get something resembling Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Add some jackpots and free spins into the mix, and you’ll get the Monty Python and the Holy Grail slot.
This Playtech slot isn’t just awesome due to the inspiration behind it. It’s also got a whole host of special features that give the gameplay that extra kick it needs. With different wilds, different free spins and a couple of solid high paying symbols, players won’t be disappointed by the opportunities afforded by Monty Python.
To find out more about how each of these features work, take a look at the explanations below.
Explore Monty Python and the Holy Grail Symbols
Monty Python and the Holy Grail Wild
The Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a Wild that substitutes for all other symbols on the reels, except for the other Wild symbol and the Scatter symbol. This helps players with creating winning combos. Also, this Wild is equal to the Holy Grail Wild in terms of payout. Both of these symbols payout a huge 5,000 coins when 5 of them land on the reels.
Holy Grail Wild
Aside from being one of the two highest paying symbols of the slot, it also substitutes for all other Wilds. However, unlike the Monty Python and the Holy Grail Wild, it has another characteristic. It moves over the reels when it lands on the reels and leaves new Holy Grail Wilds instead of any symbol it touches. The original Wild which landed first is replaced with a new symbol.
The payout from this feature is always substantial, because even if one Wild lands on the reels you’re guaranteed a big win. Probably one of the best, if not the best, features of the video slot.
Coat of Arms Scatter
The Coat of Arms Scatter, labelled with a giant ‘Free Games’, is what triggers the Free Spins rounds. They must land on reels 1, 3 or 5 in order to trigger the free spins. Otherwise, they’ll just payout according to the paytable.
Quest for Camelot Free Spins
Once this Free Spins round is activated, players then have to pick shields to determine both the number of free spins and what modifiers you’ll be playing the free spins with. The modifiers are really fun, because they’re named after iconic references from the film itself.
There’s just one hitch: each of the three Free Spins rounds have a different number of modifiers that is needed to complete their collection. Check out the free spins image at the top of this page to know what we’re talking about. Due to this, you’re way more likely to trigger the ‘Castle of the Britons’ free spins than the ‘Cave of Caerbannog’ free spins. And, as you’d image, it’s the latter of these two that can really bring home the bacon. All the modifiers have something to do with Wilds – but there’s just too many of them to explain, so you’ll have to check out the slot itself for exact descriptions.
- Castle of the Britons: 1 set of 2 modifiers. Possible modifiers: French Invaders, Nuns of Castle Anthrax, French Catapult and Trojan Rabbit.
- Forest of Bravery: 1 set of 3 modifiers. Possible modifiers: Brave Sir Robin, Knights Who Say NI, Black Knight and Three Headed Knight.
- Cave of Caerbannog: 1 set of 4 modifiers. Possible modifiers: Killer Rabbit, Tim, Black Beast of Arrrgh and Holy Hand Grenade.
Payouts and Wagering Limits
The King Arthur is, duh, the highest paying symbol of this slot which isn’t a Wild. Land 5 of a kind with this guy, and you’ll win a whooping 1000 coins. The other knights and Patsy have pretty decents payouts as well. A bit surprising, given that this is a medium variance slot, but we definitely aren’t complaining. Your best chances at winning big are if you land those Wilds though.
We played this slot for about 100 – 150 spins, and the number of times we triggered the Holy Grail Wild was decent to keep us going. We even got a huge $190 cash-out at one point. The Free Spins round is a bit more challenging to trigger, since the scatters need to land on those specific 1, 3 and 5 reels. Even when you do trigger it, there’s no guarantee that you’ll win big. We were spinning on a $0.90 bet, and the total amount of winnings we got from 7 free spins and two modifiers on Castle of the Britons is $0.34. No, we’re not joking. So the Free Spins round is all about which of the 3 different versions you trigger.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Overall, this is one fun slot to play. We might be a little biased, because we’re just such huge dang fans of the movie – but honestly it really is fun. The sheer number of special features keep this slot exciting even despite its medium variance. Beyond that, the Holy Grail feature could really win you some big money if you’re lucky. This slot gets a 4.5 star rating from us.
