The tagline for Yggdrasil‘s video slot Power Plant is ‘Get ready for the electrified supercharged slot Power Plant!’. And we can safely say that it’s a very accurate tagline, because Power Plant really is an electrifyingly exciting slot from the young masters of great gaming. Yggdrasil slots typically never disappoint when it comes to animation and design-concepts, and Power Plant is no exception to the rule. Even if you’re not that interested in winning some real money, this online slot is just a really great game to play.
Power Plant is also exceptionally innovative for one reason: it’s been specifically created to be played in portrait mode when on your phone or tablet. Maybe this is the first slot, of the first slot that’s done it right, that has successfully produced a visually brilliant game specifically for mobile casino in portrait mode. And to do that, Yggdrasil made this a 5 reel, 82 payline video slot. Play’n GO have their Multifruit 81 video slot which has 81 paylines, but even that doesn’t beat Power Plant! We’re going to stop ranting and raving about it now, and just show you why it’s so great.
The title of this video slot is very self-explanatory: the theme and concept is that of a power plant. Except less ‘industrial revolution’ and more futuristic in terms of design. Electricity plays a big part in the design of the overall game. Everything seems to be infused with some electrifying energy and flashing in crazy fluorescent colors. The short animated intro to the slot is also a feat of amazing design from Yggdrasil and it perfectly captures the cool vibe of the whole video slot.
The other thing we really love about this video slot is the background music and sound effects.
It might sound like a superficial part of the game, but we’re honestly really into the sound of this game because it’s just the right mix of grungy and techno sound to complement the rest of the gameplay. The sound effects of the spinning symbols is pretty awesome too. The symbols themselves, by the way, are like gears energized by some kind of super energy that makes them light-up and act crazy when activated by a winning combo.
Yggdrasil have recently started using the iSENSE 2.0+ platform to build their slots on, and it really shows. The quality of their games has always been on point, but recently they’ve been having one grand-slam after another in terms of cross-platform user experience and design quality. The resolution of Power Plant is at 16:9, which explains why the slot looks so high-def whether it’s on desktop or mobile casino.
Power Plant has six normal symbols which make up a winning combo when three or more are lined up in sequence on a payline beginning from the position furthest to the left. There aren’t many special features in this slot, except for the Wild symbol and the Feature Respin. The Feature Spin triggers ‘Features’, which we’ll talk about in more detail soon.
The gameplay of this game is really enjoyable and smooth. We wish that hitting winning combos happens more frequently than it actually does, though. After a while on the reels, we realised we were quite a few spins in but we hadn’t really won much money for our efforts.
Explore Power Plant Symbols
The Wild symbol of Power Plant, like of every other video slot, can substitute all other symbols on the reels to help make-up winning combos. This is great because it means more winning combos more often. Unlike other slots, if you get at least one full 8-stacked reel of Wild symbols in the base game, you’ll immediately trigger the Feature Respin and two features to go with it. But, you can get more than 1 full stack, so this is how many features you get according to how many stacked Wild reels you land:
1 stack = 2 features 2 stacks = 3 features 3+ stacks = 4 features
Feature symbols are immediately selected before the Respin starts. They then apply to the reels after the Respin has happened. Even though there are a number of advantages to these symbols, the stacked Wild reels remain sticky throughout the Respin. That means that the stacked reels don’t budge an inch, so if you get 2 stacks or 3 stacks, there isn’t much room left for much to happen. Still, the features are a really great shot at winning in the big numbers. At least they paid off well when we managed to trigger them.
After the Respin, 3-8 random symbols are replaced with a single type of symbol, guaranteeing a win. Obviously, Wild symbols cannot be replaced and cannot be picked as the random winning symbol.
After the Respin, 2-4 reel nudges will be applied to give the best possible result. Basically, the symbols get shaken up a little. Not all nudges are applied if the outcome is not beneficial to the player, meaning that with the nudges they’d get less of a payout.
This is when a normal symbol, meaning every other symbol other than a Wild, gets stacked on one of the remaining reels. This gives the player a chance at getting a high payout through a high winning combo.
Basically, after the Respin all normal symbols of the same type (let’s say, the radioactive symbol) all change to Wilds. Now, this won’t trigger another Respin because that’s not possible. But as we know Wilds give high payouts because they help compose winning combos.
If you land this Feature, then it’ll grant you an additional slot to get another Feature. Of course, if you’ve already landed 3+ stacks of Wilds, then this Feature is a bit useless because you already have access to the maximum amount of features allowed: 4.
There’s nothing complicated about the Respin. It’s triggered when you get at least 1 full stack of Wilds on a reel. During the Respin, the stack/s of Wilds remain sticky as the other reels spin once again. In Power Plant, the Respin cannot be re-triggered within itself. This is probably due to the fact that the Feature symbols give the players enough of a chance to get a good payout.
Payouts and Wagering Limits
Looking at the paytable, it’s true that the higher symbols can pay out a lot. But realistically speaking, this isn’t close to what we’d call a high paytable which promises good cashouts. In fact, when we were playing it ourselves, unless you manage to trigger the Feature Respin, then the base game itself isn’t that exciting. Jonas Strandman, Head of Gaming at Yggdrasil Gaming, said:
“Power Plant is a game which allows players to enjoy a video slot to its fullest, offering a whole new gaming experience. Re-spin features and big wins are given out frequently, so even a short session brings lots of action.”
It’s true that Respins and hitting winning combos aren’t rare, but we’d hardly say that a short session brings a lot of action. Even if you were to go for 20 spins, for example, chances are that you’ll maybe hit the Feature Respin 10 times, but win ‘big’ much less than that. Definitely not a video slot for the high-rollers or the players who want to win a lot of real cash, fast. The RTP of the entire game is 96.1%, which isn’t too bad. It’s normal for software developers to have this payout average on their slots.
The good thing about this slot is that you have a lot of control over the number of coins you’re betting per payline, which is extremely important given that we’re talking about betting on a massive 82 paylines at one go. The medium volatility of the slot means that you won’t be getting your money’s worth back on every spin, so just be cautious about those coin levels.
We’re giving this slot a 3.5 star rating. It’s an amazing delivery on our expectations of a high-quality Yggdrasil slot in terms of graphics and design. However, the gameplay itself leaves a little to be desired. The payouts just aren’t that great, and they aren’t that frequent. Still – we’d give Power Plant a spin every now and again just to hear the cool music and see the brilliant effects.
