Theme & Background

To say that Psycho is atmospheric, would be a giant understatement. NextGen have really captured the essence of the film with this game and nowhere is this better illustrated than during the intro.

You find yourself driving a car on a stormy evening, the wipers trying frantically to clear the rain from your screen. In the distance you see a sign for the Bates Motel. It says “Vacancy” beneath. You pull up outside. As you stand on the porch, the door swings open, revealing light from within. Are you brave enough to enter?

Enter the game and you’ll be rewarded with a slasher horror soundtrack of creepy music. The slot itself has the reels located on the iconic shower curtain. The background shows a gloomy night with a full moon. To the right of the reels is an illuminated sign for the Bates Motel, the ‘M’ flickering on and off menacingly. Gloomy trees flank the screen, whilst up the hill in the distance sits a spooky house, a dark figure lurking outside.

The theme continues into the game once you set the reels in motion. Each Wild is preceded by a knife slashing across the screen, whilst the scatter is the spooky looking house on the hill. Even the film’s victim Marion Crane, and Detective Arbogast, feature as symbols. Strike it lucky with a “Big Win” and the shower curtain will draw back as a knife plunges downwards towards you.

Gameplay

Psycho’s gameplay is straightforward and uncomplicated. Along the bottom of the screen, on the surface of the road, you’ll find all the buttons you need to play the game.

To the left, you’ll find an info tab that opens out to show the paytable and game features. Besides the info tab are up and down arrows that let you adjust the value of your bet. Above the arrows is a stacked coin symbol that allows you to select Max Bet.

Next along are tabs displaying your total bet, win amount and balance total. Above the balance total is a round symbol that appears greyed out. This symbol comes to prominence following a win, as it becomes the button that opens up the gamble feature.

The next button along, represented by a green circle, is the autoplay button. Once selected, you can choose from 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50 and 100 preset spins. There’s also the option to select “Last Settings” if you’ve played through your first set of autoplay spins. The final button on the right hand side is the Spin button.

It’s worth keeping an eye on the Bates Motel illuminated sign to the right of the screen, as the area below shows the multiplier amount in play.

Wild Symbol

In Psycho, you’ll be happy to see the knife slashing across our screen, because it means you’ve spun a reel with a wild. The Wild symbol itself is simple, it’s just the word “WILD” written in red letters. Wilds can appear anywhere on the reels and substitute for all symbols except scatter. The wilds also benefit from a random multiplier that can multiply your winnings by 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 or 20. Within Free Spins the multipliers are increased to 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 20 or 40.

Scatter Symbol

Spin the spooky house on the hill symbol Scatter 3 or more times across the reels and you’ll be rewarded with the Free Spins feature. 3x scatter symbols gives 10 free spins, 4x scatter gives 15 free spins and 5x scatter gives 20 free spins. Free Spins can be retriggered within the Free Spins feature and as mentioned above, the Wild multipliers are doubled within this game mode.

Gamble Feature

Ok, not quite a symbol but worth a mention here is the gamble feature. Gamble is available after any base win game and for the total amount one from the Free Spins feature. Within gamble mode you’ll have the opportunity to double your winnings with a simple red or black card face choice.

If double or nothing isn’t enough of a gamble for you, you can instead decide to pick the correct suit of card from Clubs, Spades, Hearts and Diamonds, for a chance to quadruple your winnings. Winnings can be gambled up to 5 times.

Payouts and Wagering Limits

Psycho has 25 paylines, all of which pay left to right. Only the highest win on each payline is won and symbols must be on consecutive reels, apart from scatter which can appear on any. Scatter wins are multiplied by the bet and added to payline wins. Betting values are adjustable at the bottom of the screen. These values start from $0.25 to $50.00 per spin, which consists of $0.01 to $2.00 per payline.

The symbols in Psycho include Marion Crane who will award you 1,000 coins for displaying five symbols on an active line; Detective Arbogast will grant you 250 coins when you trigger five of a kind on the reels. There’s also a peephole and a brown envelope filled with cash that will reward you with 200 coins when you manage to display five of a kind on the reels and a key to room number one that will reward your balance with 150 coins when you strike it lucky and display five of them on an active payline. There are also high card symbols that include 10, jack, queen, king and ace that will add to your winning combinations.

Psycho

Final Verdict

Psycho

80%

If your a horror movie fan, or simply a fan of atmospheric games that commit wholeheartedly to their theme, then Psycho is the game for you. Everything about this slot oozes Hitchcock’s thriller ambience and has you praying for a knife to come slashing across your screen.

Where Psycho falls a little short is in the bonus features of the slot. Whilst free spins and win multipliers are not to be sniffed at, nothing really changes from the straightforward spinning of reels. The gamble feature that allows you to double and quadruple your winnings goes a little way to alleviating the slight tinge of disappointment that the features don’t match up to the atmosphere and graphics.

All in all, Psycho lives up to the 1960’s movie upon which it is based. It’s packed with atmosphere and well worth risking a shower – and potential death – at the Bates Motel in the pursuit of riches.
