Reel Splitter 908 x 624

Microgaming have teamed up with Just For The Win studios to bring us a video slot that shaves back several decades of history. Reel Splitter takes us back to good old Las Vegas when the drinks had lots of fruit slices in them, and the Rat Pack ruled the casino floors. This fruit-themed video slot is definitely not going to win any prizes for originality, but it does carry a certain nostalgic appeal.

That said, it’s still most certainly a modern take on vintage slots, incorporating some strictly ‘online only’ features. The result is a medium volatility slot with a potential maximum win of 2,717.40x your bet.

  • The expanding reels add a layer of excitement and boosted potential wins.
  • The Free Spins feature comes with a sticky stacked wild that increases payout chances.
  • The medium variance means frequent, if not massive, wins.
  • While definitely a classic, the theme isn’t particularly original.
  • There’s no progressive jackpot.
  • It’s pretty difficult to trigger the Free Spins feature.

Theme and Background

You know how some slots have these elaborate themes based on popular characters or high-flying concepts? Well, Reel Splitter isn’t one of those. So if you’re after something current and different, you might want to walk away right now.

On the flip side, despite the fact that Reel Splitter is straight out of Robert De Niro’s Casino, it has been made incredibly well, with clean functionality and some interesting features. The music is actually a perfect accompaniment to the theme. It’s definitely an interpretation of jazz, with wins and triggered features raising the tempo to almost unbearable heights. I kind of felt like I was on the Price Is Right after correctly guessing the cost of a toaster oven.

Visually, the Reel Splitter is exactly what you would expect. Lurid, old-school Las Vegas purple and blue backgrounds are offset by faux neon lighting and card suit patterns. Across the reels are symbols for a few types of fruit, and the usual aces, kings, queens, jacks and tens. As always these carry their own valuations, increasing depending on many you land.

The high value symbols are the ‘Wild’ and ‘Free Spins’ icons. The names are literally printed across the tiles, so there’s no cause for confusion there.

Gameplay

Reel Splitter keeps things fairly basic, and that continues to be evident across the special features which are simple, straightforward and functional. Interpret this as you wish. But if you don’t want to spend your time playing for free till you figure it out, I’ve done the hard work for you.

Free Spins

This feature does exactly what it says on the tin. All you need to do is land 3 or 4 of the ‘Free Spin’ symbols on one spin and you’ll be awarded 8 or 16 free spins. Once you trigger this feature, which wasn’t as easy as I had hoped, a fifth reel will emerge between reels 2 and 3, forming a stacked Wild, and increasing paylines to 243.

As you can imagine, the wall of unmoving Wilds will boost your chances of a win with each spin exponentially, so you should be pretty excited when you trigger this feature.

Reel Splitter Re-Spin

As with the ‘Free Spins’ symbol, the ‘Reel Splitter’ symbol is clearly marked, but it was the only part of the game that required a tiny bit of time to figure out. These are the highest paying of all the symbols and if you land 4 matching symbols on 4 reels, the re-spin feature may be activated.

These 4 reels stay in place and a fifth reel is added in the middle. The middle reel re-spins and you have the chance to land a better winning combination. Once the feature ends, the reels reduce back to 4 and its business as usual again. But that won’t necessarily happen. It’s possible that you simply won’t make the cut and the reels won’t split. I’m certain this has a lot of do with random probability, but it was quite disconcerting at first.

Wilds

Wild symbols (again clearly represented by the word ‘Wild’) can substitute for any symbol except the Free Spin symbol. That would have been nice though. They don’t waver from this function, substituting identically in both the base game and during bonus features.

Payouts and Wagering Limits

You’re free to place your bets from as little as 0.10, all the way up to 100. The highest paying symbol is the ‘Reel Splitter’, which is fitting seeing as this is also the name of the slot. Land 5 of these and you can get paid out 12x your bet.

While this isn’t the most exciting payout we’ve ever come across, when you consider that activating this feature is accompanied by a full reel of stacked Wilds and 243 ways to win, you can easily work out that the probability of hitting the payout repeatedly is pretty high. That means that ultimately you’d be safe to expect a whole lot more than 12x.

The lowest paying symbols are the card suits, while the fruits sit in between ranging from 3x to 8x. At its absolute peak, Reel Splitter will pay out just under C$300,000 but quite honestly, I would hesitate to calculate the odds on that. At Medium volatility I was pleased to experience fairly regular wins and very few dead spins.

Final Verdict

Reel Splitter

84%

Ok so I’m reaching my verdict fully aware that many people won’t enjoy Reel Splitter. It’s not exactly a cutting-edge concept, and it lacks the sheer excitement generated by most slots these days. And let’s be honest, competition has become pretty tough.

But from my perspective I thoroughly enjoyed the lack of complication. Reel Splitter was so simple to understand and when I won or lost, I always knew exactly why. This was a welcome relief as I’m not always quick off the mark, and this is a true testament to the blissful simplicity that is Reel Splitter.

I enjoyed the regular payout, even if they weren’t all huge wins, and the expanding reel and stacked Wilds were definitely a rewarding feature — when I eventually succeeded in triggering it.
